Introduces students to origins of the "Humanities" in the Western tradition andplaces works of that tradition within a global historical context. Issues include: specific contribution of religious and philosophical systems to a definition of the humanities, how artists have shaped changing notions of what constitutes the humanities, and how non-Western systems of evaluating human and social endeavors have challenged Western notions of the humanities.
