An exploration of the relationship between form and content, between the work of art and the culture that produced it. The course may focus on a single period or draw upon several periods. Questions: How has reality been perceived at different times on a stage In painting In music, movement and the written word What is a performance, and what is its relationship to culture In effect, students will interpret periods and styles. They alternately will read/write/think and do/ make/perform in the effort to understand, sensually, as well as intellectually, how artists perceive reality and how they interpret it for the world. Open to all students. Prerequisites: Junior/senior standing or permission of instructor.
