This course introduces students to some of the most significant historical and contemporary documentary photographers. Students view and discuss photography projects focused on urban subjects and environments. Emphasis is placed on understanding the sociopolitical aspirations and stylistic approaches of the documentary genre. Photographers covered will include Margaret Bourke White, Walker Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Lewis Hine, Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, Mary Ellen Mark, Catherine Opie, Susan Meiselas, Sebastiao Salgado, and W.
