3 hours. A survey of sociological theory as it applies to education. Education in America has been said to be rife with conflict and contradiction. The sociology of education examines the reasons, both stated and silent, for education in America, as well as the construction of a consensus of knowledge and its interplay in the plurality, which is our society. Includes examination of the various theoretical approaches to studying education from the sociological point of view. An ongoing thread of inquiry relates to the issues of gender, race/ethnicity, and class, and how these issues affect and are affected by the American educational system. Fall
