Description:

Since the earliest days of contact Europeans have criticized the status of women in South Asia. Scholars, however, have struggled to reconcile women's apparent subjugation with the myriad religious traditions that honor the feminine divine. This course will explore gender in South Asian religions both through understanding the place of the Goddess in Hinduism and Buddhism and women's religious practices throughout the subcontinent.
