This course will examine the role of women in European society from 1500 to the present from the disciplinary perspectives of history and theatre. Class members will be asked to contemplate the use of gender as a universal category of historical investigation and dramatic criticism. Focusing on the impact on European women, possible topics include: the Renaissance and Reformation, the Witchcraze, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the industrial revolution and the growth of consumerism, the "new woman," Feminism, the First World War, and World War II.
