Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. An introduction of the basics of drug activity and mechanisms. Strategies used to identify lead compounds such as natural product chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, molecular modeling, and high-throughput screening. Relationship of molecular structure to pharmacological activity. Corequisite: Pharmaceutical Sciences 177L. Prerequisites: Chemistry 51A-B-C or equivalent, and Biological Science 98 or Chemistry 128. Same as Chemistry 177.
