This course is an exploration of the fascinating religious history of Japan. Beginning in pre-historic Japan with the early Chinese records continuing through the newer forms of religiosity in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, we will use indigenous and imported religious ideas as lens to examine elements of Japanese society such as Japanese aesthetics, philosophy, environmentalism, and politics.
