Prerequisite: ART 106, ART 111, ART 206, or ART 260 This advanced course applies creativity, ritual, emotional attachments to nature, insight, and technique to a tangible yet ephemeral vision balancing nature's elemental resources with deeper human understanding. Environmental and ecological art-using natural materials as a response to nature and making art designed to mitigate environmental problems-spring from nature's basicelements. After surveying historical examples ranging from indigenous art of Native American peoples, the Earthwork projects of the 1970s to the ecologically restorative work of environmental artists of recent decades, students will work to create an outdoor work of art using nature as a medium, leaving no trace.
