An introduction to the work of Shakespeare and his contemporaries in relation to Elizabethan life and wider literary traditions. The course readings will be considered as textual artifacts of their time and location. The role of the writer and audience will be examined, as well as the relationship of Shakespeare to other significant poets and playwrights of the period. Offered only in London.
