Three Credits LA The primary focus of this course is on the dynamics of societies in transition in sub-Saharan Africa. It will trace the evolution of these African societies, not only from colonial dependency to independence but also from traditional, tribal units to modern nation-states. The course will critically examine some of the major problems of the developing countries, concentrating on the difficulties in creating viable and stable governments in Africa. It also attempts to analyze the prospects for economic development and democracy in contemporary Africa. Some countries will be selected for special attention.
