ENG 354 - British Modernism

Institution:
Marist College
Subject:
Description:
Three Credits LA This course examines British and Irish Modernist writers, such as Lawrence, Woolf, Joyce, Mansfield, Foster, Yeats, and Eliot. While we will undertake close textual readings, the course focuses less on determining the "meanings" of discrete texts and more on looking at theoretical issues. As such, the course will follow four strands: modernism as an international movement; the texts in relationship to the intellectual and ideological temper of the times; modernist literature in relationship to other arts of the period; modernism and literary experimentation. Offered every other year. (Fulfills the Chronological Contiguous course requirement for English Literature majors when paired with ENG 335.)
