3 cr. Designed to prepare new vocational technical teachers for their first teaching assignment, the characteristics of an effective teacher as well as the tools required by first year teachers to be successful will be explored. These include techniques for establishing effective classroom routines, student instruction and assessment, and maintaining a positive classroom/shop/laboratory climate that conveys high expectations. Students also will learn to identify the elements of a course/program curriculum, as well as how to develop a lesson plan, assign and grade homework and collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction, assessment and student achievement.
