Description:
3 cr. 3 hr. This course on the "father of modern English poetry" focusesprimarily on Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, in a context of the history and culture of medieval England. Students will learn to read Chaucer's 14th-century Middle English, the London dialect that evolves into today's English, with the assistance of audiotapes. The tales are studied both in the framework of the interrelated stories told by the pilgrim characters on the way to Canterbury, and in themselves, as they present various medieval genres and issues of concern and interest to Chaucer's audience and to us today.
