Over the past two centuries, the pendulum has consistently swung back and forth between the belief that heredity is the crucial factor determining human behavior and the belief that environment has a preponderant effect on human personality. This course traces the mercurial history of the nature-nurture debate, in order to reveal its effect on public policy and its influence on the way Americans today think about such matters as race, intelligence, poverty, and gender.
