Topics will include images of China in the West; art, language, literature, and beliefs; the evolution of traditional social roles and identities; the rise of the imperial state and problems of empire; Western imperialism; major movements for reform and revolution; the status of women; the cultural revolution; democracy and the roles of intellectuals and artists; and China's international interests today and over time. Fall.
