This course is designed to help pre-service and practicing teachers understand the reading process and its application to teaching in the content areas. A theoretical base will be formulated from which congruent classroom instruction can emerge. A variety of instructional techniques and strategies will be learned in order for all students to have a strong repertoire for creating effective instruction for all children, including those mainstreamed with special needs. The course will include instruction in planning and implementing lessons, selecting and modifying instructional materials, and assessing need and achievement. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of effective study habits in the content areas.
