An examination of the development of Spanish theater from the Golden Age, (with a selection of playwrights such as Lope de Rueda, Lope de Vega, Calderon de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro, and Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor) through the Romantic period (El duque de Rivas and Jose Zorrilla) and modern theater (Federico Garcia Lorca). Videos of plays read will be viewed. Scenes and acts from each play will be performed in class (readings); lectures, discussions, group work, videos, and extensive readings in Spanish; oral and written reports. Prerequisites: 310, 311, or 320 and one 300 or 400 level course, or permission of instructor.
