This course focuses on the skills of inquiry, critical thinking and problem-solving as they relate to the examination and analysis of crosscultural characteristics and needs of culturally diverse and/or linguistically different children and youth in the teaching of social studies and language arts. Curriculum and methods of teaching social studies (including an emphasis on New York City and New York State) and of developing literacy in elementary learners and middle school will be studied in the context of the impact of cultural difference on students' learning and experiences in multi- and monolingual urban school settings. Fieldwork required. Credit: 3 semester hours.
