A systematic study of the role of formal and informal legal systems in creating, controlling, and sustaining deviance. The course focuses on changing legal systems in modern urban society and the role of law in a mass urban society. Emphasis is placed on such issues as: creation of deviance through legislation; the legislation of morality; unanticipated consequences of social control; legitimate and illegitimate power; and violence and social control. Prerequisite: SOCI 101D.
