This course examines the development of certain aspects of identity into important political categories. The notion of political ideology will be examined by following the shift in the politics of the left from class (the Old Left) to identity (the New Left). The identity movements studied include (but will not be limited to) feminism, the civil rights movement, and the gay rights movement. The complex intersections of these movements will also be studied.
