Ritual frequently involves darker aspects that include the use of violence, either physical or symbolic. This course engages students in a discussion of those aspects of ritual from a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from puberty rites in the Sepik River Valley in New Guinea to fraternity initiations to the crucifixion and communion in the Christian religion. After a general introduction to contemporary approaches to studying ritual, this course examines specific models of ritual and considers them in a variety of Western and non-Western contexts to understand the ways that violence is used in ritual cross-culturally. Recommended prerequisite: ANTH 100D or 203D.
