The principles and methods of biological anthropology can be used to provide crucial evidence in the investigation of past deaths. Identification of individuals, time, and cause of death may be determined from an analysis of skeletal and, where available, soft tissue remains. Topics include homicides, genocide, battlefield casualties, cannibalism, and disease as mortality agents for human groups from the recent to the very distant past. Actual cases by forensic anthropologists are discussed. Recommended prerequisite: Prior coursework in Anthropology or Biology.
