This course addresses the nature and structure of human languages. The methods and theories of linguistics are used to study patterns of sound, grammar, and meaning in human speech communication. Applications of linguistics to human history, language acquisition and second language learning, and the role of language in human society are discussed. Sophomore status is recommended.
