This course focuses on the application to nursing of theoretical and clinical evidenced based outcomes derived from anthropology, sociology and other cross-cultural investigations. The development of a conceptual framework from which the nurse can approach the care of individuals, families, non-family groups, institutions and communities whose culture differs significantly from that of the care-givers is emphasized. Important broad dimensions of culture are explored in order to produce a fully holistic view of people. These dimensions include biophysical state, physical environment, language, religious or spiritual orientation, kinship patterns, material and nonmaterial cultural phenomena, politics, economics, law, and educational, technological and professional care practices. Prerequisites: NURS 102. Corequisites: NURS 301.
