This course examines contrasts and parallels between two great authors of Russia: Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. The works include Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov and Tolstoy's War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and "The Kreutzer Sonata."Close readings and discussions of literary texts are accompanied by explorations of historical, religious, political, and cultural context. The course is conducted in English.
