Credit Hours: 2.00. The underlying principle of BIOL 270 is that an accurate understanding of cells relies on the ability to describe the workings of the cell's components in quantitative, spatial or systems terms. The course begins with a treatment of the physical properties of eukaryotic cells and their components. We then proceed to how these components and the rules that govern them give rise to more complex cellular systems. The course is divided into three main subject areas: 1) First Principles, a review of relevant physical principles of thermodynamics and descriptions of the major classes of macromolecules of the cell; 2) Synthesis and bioenergetics, a treatment of how cells synthesize macromolecules and construct organelles, how they harvest energy from the environment, and how they couple energetically favorable to unfavorable events; 3) Cellular systems, which includes signal transduction, the cell cycle, the cytoskeleton and cell motility, and cell-cell interaction.
