Credit Hours: 4.00. An introductory foundation in general and medical microbiology with emphasis on dental microbiology. Host-parasite relationships between humans and microbes (bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi) are explored with emphasis on epidemiologic principles of disease transmission, treatment and prevention. In the laboratory, sterile techniques and methods for isolating microbes are learned, the structure and function of microbes isolated from the human body (e.g. oral cavity) are studied, and disinfection and sterilization principles are explored.
