Prerequisite: Core Requirements To increase student comprehension of health disparities and to improve their skills in reduction of health disparities. At the end of this elective, students will be able to address patient/physician/system roles in development of disparities; be proficient in two behavioral health interventions and have working knowledge of several patient coping strategies; have an increased understanding of health disparities, their causes, and how a variety of factors influence the health of the underserved and minority populations. Students will attend lecture/seminar sessions; provide services in underserved communities; complete an educational portfolio; develop and deliver patient education modules; co-facilitate communication labs and complete an independent study project on a challenging communication issue; and become proficient in two behavioral health interventions.
