3 SP This course will provide a well-rounded understanding of the foundations of contemporary Russian and East European political institutions and politics. This entails analysis of the historical roles of nationalism, communist values, and Soviet behavior as they relate to the development of Russia and the new states of the former Soviet Union. Special emphasis will be given to questions of nation-building, legitimacy, and political leadership.
