Examines current trends in New York City as part of a worldwide social process: the wave of third world immigration; the city as the location of choice for businesses that promote globalization; local and global dynamics underlying the attack on the world trade center. Traditional themes of urban sociology-ethnic competition, inequality, policing, public space, racial segregation, homelessness, and education-will be examined in the new context.
