This course will examine the clash of cultures resulting from the coming of American missionaries to China in the 19th- and 20thcenturies. Attention will be given to the differences between Christianity and Chinese religions, the role played by western imperialism in giving missionaries access to China, and the particular relationship between Chinese women and American women missionaries.
