This lecture course introduces students to painting, manuscript illumination, sculpture, and architecture produced in Europe during the 4th to the 14th centuries. Topics include Early Christian, Byzantine, Early Medieval, Carolingian, Ottonian and Romanesque art, as well as the birth and development of Gothic architecture. Lectures will also explore the evolution of cathedral sculpture, stained glass, and manuscript illumination. The end of the course will be dedicated to the study of the Gothic period in Italy.
