This course examines the biological and sociocultural construction of body image in both men and women. We explore such cultural and social practices as nudity, tattooing, piercing, scarification, dietary habits, physical activity and sports performance and their associated myths and realities. We explore how the human body is a terrain of contested meaning within society. The course provides an examination of the causes and consequences of women's poor body image, contemporary and historically.
