The American auto industry is examined in its relationship to the economic and political structures of 20th-century United States. This includes a focus on the social history of the industry as well as a discussion of the nature of auto work. Proposals for changing social relations at work are also examined. Concludes with an examination of the impact of the industry on a local community (Detroit). Students cannot receive credit for both SOC 441 and SOC 541.
