In this course, the student is exposed to both the practical and the abstract nature of mathematics. The usefulness of mathematics is seen by considering such topics as problem solving, graph theory, inductive and deductive reasoning, and statistics. The abstract nature of mathematics and its methodology is seen by a study of an algebraic structure such as a group. Another important aspect of this course is the historical development of mathematics. Finally, the student is exposed to specific areas of mathematics in order to develop his/her appreciation of and skill level with mathematical concepts, facts, and processes. Students intending to elect this course should have taken the equivalent of one year of high school algebra and one year of high school geometry. This course is not open to mathematics concentrators.
