A survey of fundamental concepts and major concerns in the study of English as a Second Language (ESL). The course examines a variety of psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic issues related to second language acquisition (SLA), ranging from theoretical to pedagogical. A primary focus is on developmental patterns and cognitive processes of SLA and individual variation in ESL speakers in terms of their social motivations and learning strategies.
