This course will utilize both philosophical and literary texts to examine the nature of self. We will explore the self?s capacity for self-knowledge and self-deception, its relation to others, its connection to gender, its existence as body, and finally its desire to disown and flee itself. The philosophical texts will provide theoretical structures within which to both experience and discuss the literary texts. Students cannot receive credit for both LIBS 467 and LIBS 567.
