This course will examine the colonial period in Latin American history from the Spanish and Portuguese contact and conquest to the early nineteenth-century wars for independence. It will focus on the background of European colonization, the process of interaction between Natives and Europeans, the growth and development of colonial society, the shifting uses of land and labor, and the roots of the nineteenth-century revolutionary movements.
