Examines the historical myths that supported traditional Russian institutions, the literature that expressed these myths in symbolic form, the relationships between the social classes, and the conflict of values and goals in 19th-century Russia. Through the literature of the period the course explores social, intellectual, and political movements. The material is organized to consider both revolutionary and reactionary ideologies, origins of each, and the dynamics between them.
