From the eighth century, a new religious community with no developed artistic heritage spread rapidly over the ancient empires of the near and middle east and as far west as Spain and Hungary. Appropriating established forms and traditions, Muslim cultures created a brilliant system of religious and secular art that reveals national diversity and an underlying unity of purpose. This course provides an introduction to the visual traditions of Muslim cultures.
