The course is a survey of Latin American people and cultures from the conquest to the present. It will focus on culture change and sources of conflict by analyzing topics that include the economy, kinship, ethnicity, social stratification, gender, politics, religion, and the arts. Readings will include ethnographic description, history, biography, contemporary fiction.
