Credit 3 hours. Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of the Department Head. A detailed study of the Reformation from its late medieval origins to the Treaty of Westphalia, with emphasis on doctrinal conflict, religious wars, social upheaval, and the new monarchy. Three units on the Early Reformation (origins-1555); Religious Wars and Absolutism (1555-1610); and the Thirty Years War and Related Conflicts (1610-1648). Includes in-depth coverage of the role of women. Lectures, readings, and discussion. Offered every 2 years in the spring semester.
