Human social organization is examined in cross-cultural perspective. Analysis of kinship systems in stateless societies and of the state and other institutional arrangements in complex societies. Attention to the historical development of major theoretical approaches to social organization: structural functionalism, structuralism, human ecology, sociobiology, political economy, post-modernism.
