SOCI 1790 - Special Topics in Sociology

Institution:
Saint Paul College
Subject:
Description:
This course examines the construction of sex and gender from a sociological perspective. How do these categories matter to individuals and society? Because gender is a basic dimension of social life and relations, we often forget that it is one of the most salient and dynamic dimensions of social stratification in the U.S. and the world today. Within this course, we will work to understand how we are shaped by our gender identities and explore the consequences of living in a gendered society. We will look at how sex, gender, and issues of sexuality are socially constructed, transmitted, and transformed paying particular attention to intersections of race/ethnicity, nationality, class, age, and ableism. We will explore theoretical approaches to the study of gender and explore how social power works to shape our lives as we critique the equity of sex and gender in relation to various ideologies and social institutions, such as education, work, family life, religion, media, etc. (Prerequisite(s): READ 0721 or READ 0724 or EAPP 0860 with a grade of "C" or better, or appropriate assessment score) (MnTC: Goal 5) 3C/3/0/0
