5 credits, 7 hours (3-4-0) Prerequisite: IST 137 or instructor approval Students learn how automatic controllers work and operate and the importance of automation in the modern process industry. Subjects covered include PID control (pneumatic, electronic, and D.C.S. systems), Ziegler-Nichols tuning, controller operation and tuning for different process variables, cascade loops, correct operation and maintenance of valves and pumps, correct valve and piping sizing, basic tubing and pipe fitting. Upon completion, students will be able to tune and control a process in automatic as well as understand the operation of control loops (input, decision, and action), and all the equipment involved in this process.
