Surveys the continued development of Eastern civilization in the modern period, noting not only the richness of its cultural achievements, but also the impact of and the responses to the Western imperial presence. Particular emphasis is given to the gradual transformation of Asian societies and the variety of influences which led to political independence in the 20th century.
