Prerequisite: It is recommended that students have taken HIST 2773 U.S. History Since 1876. This course is designed to introduce the advanced student to the history of the United States and its involvement in the Vietnam War. The course will cover a brief history of Vietnam and its people; the French colonization of Vietnam; the turning point for France, the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, and the Geneva Conference of 1954; the impact of the Cold War ideology on America and its response to Vietnam; American involvement in Vietnam beginning in the early 1960s and going through the fall of Saigon in 1975. The course will look at the cost of the war in human, economic, political, and social terms.
