3 hours credit. This course will enable the student to understand his/her role and responsibilities in the classroom, to understand the purpose, components, and process of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), and to become familiar with landmark legislation governing special education including Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). In addition, this course will enable the student to understand the purpose of a specific curriculum and his/her role in implementing it, to develop a variety of instructional strategies and apply strategies for reinforcement of skills introduced by the teacher, to interpret lesson plans and develop activities to implement the plan. The student will complete a minimum of 150 hours of work in a classroom that serves children with special needs.
