This course presents a survey of American history from the European discovery to the close of the Reconstruction Era. It emphasizes the economic, cultural, and political factors which led to the development of one nation from a diversity of peoples. Topics studied are the religious and social structure of colonial America, the factors leading to the break with England, the democratization of America, Manifest Destiny, sectional and social tensions leading to the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the beginnings of industrialization. The course is intended for individuals who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree and those who desire to stengthen their understanding of the development of our national institutions.
